Boult's 18th over starts with a boundary, but he recovers to give up only three runs off the next four balls.
The last one is a wide yorker. And he fairly nails it. Except David nails it better and finds a boundary through cover. It's extraordinary hitting. That's just pure bottom-hand power. Mumbai need 32 off 12 balls. Forecaster has them at 17% favourites.
And it's all thanks to Sandeep Sharma.
He wasn't picked at the auction.
He came in as a replacement when Prasidh Krishna couldn't play the IPL for Royals.
And so far, he's survived an epic finisher's innings from MS Dhoni. And now he's picked up a catch that will be replayed over and over and over again because it's taken out the key man keeping Mumbai in this game.
Suryakumar Yadav is gone. For once his scoop doesn't work. Because Sandeep runs back from short fine. 19 metres says the broadcast. All the while looking up over his left shoulder. Even so, the ball seems to beating him. He has to dive. Propel himself off the ground and reach out with both hands. It's fingertip stuff.
Kuldeep Sen comes into bowl his first over, and he disappears.
Wankhede is roaring again. That's more like it.
They roared for Sachin. They roared for Rohit. They roared for Bumrah. They roared for Malinga. And now they are roaring for Suryakumar Yadav. He is 43 off 20. Mumbai are 124 for 3. They need 89 in 42 balls. ESPNcricinfo's forecaster gives them an 11% chance of victory.
The fifth (legal) ball of that over was originally a wicket. Kuldeep thought he had Tilak Varma. Tilak Varma thought so too. He went for a review with only three seconds left on the clock. It was a desperate, hopeful call. And it turned out to be right because the seamer was bowling over the wicket and the chances of the ball pitching outside leg were high. It pitched outside leg. Wankhede roared again. Varma punched the air.
Varma, after getting that life, seems to be back to his old self. He bullies Yuzvendra Chahal; one of those shots was a premeditated reverse sweep. The legspinner saw it and tried to fire it out of the batter's reach outside off stump. But he still caught up with it.
For as tough as this pitch has been, we've seem some remarkable shots played on it! Mumbai need 72 off 36. Forecaster has them 23.9% favourites.
It is hard to hit Ashwin for sixes. Cameron Green tries and is caught on the midwicket boundary.
Having bowled over 200 balls this IPL, he has given away only nine sixes.
I wanted to see if there are anybody as difficult to hit out of the ground and for a 200-ball cut off, there's nobody. Ashwin has the highest balls per six ratio.
For a 100 ball cut-off - and this has nothing to do with this game, just something that's startling and good - Mayank Markande is the best, giving away just two sixes. Woof! He's come out of nowhere and is having an amazing season!
He's 15 off 6 and already sparking conference meetings among the Royals.
As awesome as his shots sometimes are - in that over above he scooped Holder over the keeper, and next ball, an attempted yorker from around the wicket, he whipped it straight-bat through midwicket - the thing that is striking about him is how much belief he has and how he is never shaken.
This pitch has not been kind to batters. It's slow. It's not coming on. It produced perhaps the saddest Rohit Sharma and Jos Buttler innings to date. Those two are top-level players but they couldn't hack this pitch.
Here comes this guy, who not so long ago bagged three ducks on the trot, and he keeps playing the way he's ALWAYS played. High-risk shots. Except he's timing them all perfectly. His balance at the crease is spot on. And the point where he makes contact with the ball, even when he plays those scoops, his head is invariable still. This is a triumph of belief. So kids, when you go through a rough patch, don't doubt yourself. Keep doing what you do. It'll work out.
